Moments after South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster signed the “fetal heartbeat” bill into law, Planned Parenthood sued—effectively preventing the abortion law from taking effect.

The CEO of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic calls the bill “blatantly unconstitutional.”

Planned Parenthood has similarly challenged other states trying to pass laws restricting abortion. Many lawsuits are still tied up in the courts.

Pro-life advocates are trying to get the issue before the U.S. Supreme Court. In the hope that the now conservative majority will overturn Roe v. Wade—the 1973 ruling supporting abortion.

But the Biden Administration has declared its commitment to codify Roe v. Wade into law—something Planned Parenthood has advocated for for years.

The abortion provider has expressed its support for the administration, and says it plans to push “bold agenda items” under President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
