Authorities in Boston are seeking the public's help in identifying two suspects who are accused of robbing a children's lemonade stand at gunpoint on Wednesday.

According to a press release from the Boston Police Department, officers responded just before 4:45 p.m. to a report of an armed robbery on West Ninth Street in South Boston, where two children had been operating a lemonade stand.

The children told officers the suspects initially walked past their booth several times before coming over and asking if they accepted Apple Pay.

"Before the victims could respond, the suspects grabbed a box containing U.S. currency," officials said. "One suspect then displayed a black firearm in his waistband before both individuals fled the area."

Police did not release any additional details about the crime or a description of the suspects. However, the department shared surveillance footage and grainy still images of the two alleged armed robbers, who appear to be wearing black ski masks. The taller of the two appears to have on a white- or cream-colored shirt and shorts with a black backpack, while the other is dressed in all black.

Speaking with CBS News Boston, the children's father, Dave Byrne, said the suspects appeared to be juveniles. He said the two boys first told his 12-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter that they didn't have any money to pay for lemonade before returning and brandishing a gun.

"My kids immediately just put their hands up and said 'take whatever you want,'" Byrne told the outlet. "I'm proud of my kids for that, and I'm proud of them for basically protecting each other, but also being smart in that bad situation."

The kids' cash box was later recovered without any cash inside. Officials did not share how much money it contained at the time of the robbery.

Byrne told CBS that the incident unfolded in broad daylight, adding that his children were quite shaken up by the whole ordeal.

"I'm pretty disgusted with it. They're young children," he said. "Definitely a little disturbed, definitely a little upset about everything. They're sad. They don't think something like this should ever happen."

The investigation remains ongoing, and the Boston Police Department has asked anyone with information about the incident, including any relevant photos or videos of the suspects, to contact detectives directly at (617) 343-4742. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Crime Stoppers hotline by calling 1-800-494-8477 or texting the word "TIP" to 27463.
