A popular chocolate company is recalling thousands of bonbon boxes sold across more than 40 states after a labeling mix-up left walnut allergen information off the packaging—a mistake that could prove deadly for some consumers.

French Broad Chocolates PBC, an Asheville, North Carolina-based company, announced Thursday it is pulling its Bette's Bake Sale Bonbon Collection from shelves and canceling online orders over the mislabeling. The company discovered that walnuts—a tree nut allergen—were not properly disclosed on product inserts.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration published the recall notice Friday.

The affected products—sold in 6-piece (2.5 oz), 12-piece (5 oz), and 24-piece (10 oz) paper gift boxes—were distributed between April 14 and April 20, 2026. The recall covers two batch numbers: 260414 and 260417.

The root of the problem was a printing error buried inside the box. The tasting notes insert included with each collection incorrectly swapped the descriptions for two bonbons—the Walnut Fudge and the Peach Cobbler. A customer reaching for what the guide described as a nut-free piece could have unknowingly bitten into a walnut-containing one instead.

The company said it learned of the labeling error on April 20, when a French Broad Chocolates team member flagged the mistake.

"People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products," the company warned in its announcement.

The boxes were sold at French Broad Chocolates' brick-and-mortar retail stores in Asheville as well as through the company's website, frenchbroadchocolates.com. Online orders reached customers across 42 states and Washington, D.C., including California, Texas, New York, and Florida.

The specific lot and date codes for the recalled products are as follows: the 6-piece box from Batch 260414 carries a best-by date of June 29, 2026, while the same size from Batch 260417 expires June 30, 2026. The 12-piece box from Batch 260414 is dated June 22, 2026, and Batch 260417 is dated June 30, 2026. Both batch numbers of the 24-piece box carry expiration dates of June 29 and June 30, 2026.

As of the announcement, no illnesses or allergic reactions had been reported in connection with the recalled products.

Consumers who purchased the affected boxes and have a tree nut allergy are urged to return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or throw it away immediately.
