Officers responded at about 6:15 p.m. to a report of a person shot on I-75 near North Central Avenue Southwest, according to the department.
When police arrived, they found a 34-year-old woman inside a white BMW SUV suffering from a gunshot wound in the northbound lanes.
“The victim was transported to the hospital by ambulance in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries,” the police said.
Homicide investigators responded to the scene. Police also said the information released remains preliminary and subject to change as the investigation develops.
As of April 17, Atlanta police told NTD in an email that the death investigation remains open and active, and no further details have been released, including any known suspects.
Investigators said preliminary findings suggest that Huntley could have been shot at a separate and unknown location, and the case remains under investigation by the Homicide Unit.
Family members said Huntley left work and was driving home in heavy rush-hour traffic when she was shot, in what relatives described as a sudden act of violence.
Allen also said her daughter tried to call 911 after being shot and attempted to exit the vehicle while it was still on the roadway.
Her mother described Huntley as a bright presence whose energy could fill a room. She added, “You’re talking about a light, a shining light that got snuffed out,” describing her daughter. Speaking with her daughter's work colleagues and sharing the news with them, they also shared how much of a light Huntley was to others.
Her mother said her daughter was hardworking, having purchased a home on her own just a few years ago, raising two girls on her own, and she had just recently received a promotion at work.
Allen said the family is now searching for answers, and she believes someone witnessed the shooting. She said the family would continue to honor her daughter's memory. “I’m a woman of faith, vengeance belongs to God but my daughter will be vindicated," she said.
