Legendary British rock band Genesis announced they would reunite for their "The Last Domino?" 10-date tour this fall—their first in 13 years.
The group already dropped a conspicuous hint on their official Instagram page featuring a picture of Phil Collins (drums/lead vocals), Tony Banks (keyboards), and Mike Rutherford (guitar/bass) accompanied by the text, "And then there were three," apparently alluding to their 1978 album by the same name that featured a lineup of the same three after lead singer Peter Gabriel left the group.
"I think it's a natural moment," Rutherford said on Zoe Ball's BBC Radio 2 breakfast show Wednesday morning. "It's happened very naturally. Phil's been out on tour the last two-and-a-half years doing his stuff, and it sort of seemed the natural moment to have a conversation about it. We're all good friends, we're all above grass and here we are."
"I'm looking forward to doing it," said Rutherford. "I worked it out, and we've only done two shows in the UK in the last 28 years, so we haven't over-worked it."
The band will perform in its classic lineup complemented by longtime associate Daryl Stuermer on guitar and bass and by Collins's 18-year old son, Nicholas, who will take on most of the drumming parts so his father can focus on the lead singing. "I don't think I'm capable of it," Collins told Rolling Stone in 2018.
Phil Collins, who uses a walking stick nowadays, suffered nerve damage during the group's last 2007 tour. Since then, he has not able to drum physically demanding music for an extended time, despite undergoing a back operation in 2016.
"For me, it wasn't a deal-breaker," Collins said on Zoe Ball's show, "but it was a problem we had to overcome, with me not playing, although I'll be doing my best to play some bits on the tour."
"He can sound like Phil," Banks said, referring to Nicholas's drumming. "And it gave us a whole idea of how we could do it because we knew Phil couldn't be the drummer on the road again," he added.
The only suspect missing in this reunion is co-founder and former lead singer Peter Gabriel, who has been solo since 1975.
Banks said it wouldn't matter because "most of the songs people know" came after Gabriel's departure, but added, "We love Peter."
