Seattle police are searching for a suspect in connection with the murder of a University of Washington student who was found fatally stabbed in a campus housing building over the weekend, officials said.
First responders attempted lifesaving measures, but the student was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.
Campus officers secured the area before Seattle police detectives took over the investigation, with homicide and crime scene units responding to process evidence.
Police said the circumstances leading up to the killing are still under investigation. However, officers are actively searching for a suspect described as a black male with a beard, approximately 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8 in height, who was wearing a vest over a button-up shirt and blue jeans.
Three roommates at Nordheim Court told Fox 13 that a man matching the description attempted to break into their apartment on April 25, roughly two weeks before the fatal stabbing. They said they heard noise coming from their kitchen, where one roommate discovered the man trying to get in through a window.
The students said responding officers found a knife nearby, but the suspect was not apprehended.
In an online statement, University of Washington President Robert Jones said he was heartbroken over the killing and extended condolences to the victim's family and loved ones.
NTD reached out to the Seattle Police Department for additional information, but a response was not received by publication time. Nordheim Court also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
