The IRS announced on Monday that individuals and businesses in Arkansas and Tennessee have until Nov. 3 to file tax returns—instead of the normal "Tax Day" of April 15.

The IRS defines disaster tax relief as a filing extension due to storms, flooding, tornadoes, and fires—or any area designated a natural disaster area by FEMA.

On April 2 and 5, respectively, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) declared Tennessee and Arkansas sites of natural disaster due to severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding that began on April 2.

People in 11 other states that were subject to other natural disasters are also eligible for a filing extension, according to the IRS.

In Kentucky, for example, severe storms that began on Feb. 14 caused six inches of flooding, leaving cars and buildings submerged.

As a result, an IRS statement said that affected individuals and businesses in the entire state of Kentucky will have until Nov. 3 to file returns and pay any taxes that had originally been due on April 15.

In addition, victims of the Southern California and Los Angeles County wildfires that started in January will have until Oct. 15 to file and pay their tax returns.

Figures from California's Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire) show that in 2025, 12 people died from the Palisades fire and 18 from the Los Angeles area fires.
“The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area,” the agency said in a Feb. 11 statement. “These taxpayers do not need to contact the agency to get this relief.”

Residents of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and both North and South Carolina have also been granted an extension until May 1 due to hurricanes Helene and Milton, which hit those areas in September and October 2024, respectively.

Government and private experts estimate the losses incurred during Hurricane Helene at some $50 billion, and that some 95 percent or more of the property damaged in the storm was uninsured.

Residents of some 37 counties and cities in Virginia can lawfully file their tax returns on May 1 instead of April 15, with the IRS adding that in West Virginia, storm victims in Boone, Greenbrier, Lincoln, Logan, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers, Wayne, and Wyoming counties have until Nov. 3 to file their tax returns.
