Artistry in Shen Yun ‘Out of This World,’ Says Studio Owner

Theatergoers at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood were taken on a vivid journey through 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture. Shen Yun Performing Arts brought ancient China to life using classical dance, live music, and colorful costumes—all set against an innovative 3D backdrop. The May 4 performance left theatergoers in awe, some describing it as otherworldly.

“Divine, I would use the word divine,” said Connor Linnerooth, a videographer and studio owner. “I thought the symbiotic relationship between the people on stage and the screen were done with such uniformity, I couldn’t even tell sometimes when it was happening. It was incredible to see something like that, you’d usually see on a movie screen, CGI effects. But on a stage with actual performers, it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”

He was deeply impressed with Shen Yun’s artistry: “All of this was just done in conjunction with one another, the music, the dancing, all of it just blended so well. I thought that they all were out of this world.”

“I love the show. It’s wonderful. Can really appreciate the athleticism of the dancers, their beautiful costumes, the choreography, and I really appreciate the way they’re integrating the choreography with the set designs and just the composition of how the dances work,” said Valerie Lettera-Spletzer, former computer artist at DreamWorks Animation. “I thought the way that the characters would float and move into the background was very believable, for being in the audience and experiencing that fantasy journey that they’re taking.”

“I loved it. That’s a beautiful blend of Western and Eastern instruments. It matches, it matches. It’s unique,” said Sofi Sarkisyan, a musician. “Beautiful musicians, pianist, and the vocalist.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive traditional Chinese culture and values, rooted in the divine, that have been under threat since the Chinese Communist Party took power in 1949. The performance also includes scenes from modern-day China, highlighting how life has changed under communist rule.

“I think those values, like peace and respect, and dignity, are something that we need a lot more of in today’s society. And the fact that they’re showing that and promoting that on stage is something that not only you love seeing, but also taking away from a piece like this, and going out into the world and spreading that kind of message. I think Shen Yun is doing an amazing job with that,” Mr. Linnerooth said.

“Thank you for just being incredible artists, incredible dancers, you’re just bringing joy to the audience. I know during one scene, it was very emotional and I shared a few tears, properly placed. But I really felt their emotion and their artistry, they’re doing a brilliant job,” Ms. Lettera-Spletzer said.

“I would say that seeing Shen Yun on the stage is very transcendental. It’s a very religious experience when you’re going to. It’s something very moving and powerful, and it’s something that you just really have to see once in your lifetime,” Mr. Linnerooth said.

“I would recommend 100%. I would recommend everyone to come and see themselves,” Ms. Sarkisyan said.

Shen Yun will be performing in Nashville, Tennessee, on May 10 and 11.
