Shen Yun Performing Arts dazzled audiences at the Miller Theater in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on April 18.

Delaware State Representative Lyndon Yearick was in attendance and presented the artists with a certificate of recognition in honor of Shen Yun’s 20th anniversary and for their exceptional artistry and continued dedication to preserving and sharing the beauty of traditional Chinese culture in the tri-state area.

Other audience members also expressed appreciation for the performance's beauty and artistry.

Kelly Millar, a dance teacher, said, “The way they bring technique from dance and the cultural aspect, and they marry it together with the costumes, the lights, the beautiful music, the choreography, it all is just mesmerizing to me. It was a beautiful, beautiful performance.”

“They’re amazing. They’re absolutely amazing. And the dancers are so precise with the screen. It was fascinating to me. Fascinating,” said Phaedra Schwartz, a musician.

“It was exciting. It was very energetic. The dancing was great, and the performance was wonderful,” said John Armstrong, a retired product strategist.

Gina Armstrong, a retired attorney, said, “I loved it. I thought the cultural context, the narrators gave a great bit of background to what you were about to see. And then I agree with my husband that the lyrics of the songs up on the screen were universal.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from before communism. Through story-based dance and a live orchestra, Shen Yun takes audiences on a journey through ancient China.

Ms. Armstrong said, “I thought that the dancers’ presentation preserved a cultural part of history, generally. That is great to see. I think it’s wonderful that it’s being so well preserved and presented in such a way that you can appreciate that which it’s derived from.”

Ms. Millar said, “Being able to see that story and play it through from beginning to end, seeing the way they portrayed, having the seriousness of telling the story, but adding in the comedic aspects as well, being able to laugh and see things come to life from the screen to the stage, the way they did costume changes.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun has been touring the world since 2006 and brings an all-new performance each year.

Ms. Armstrong said, “The lyrics were uplifting. And then the performance itself, each different scenario had an ultimate positive message that the goodness of people is really something that we need to cherish, and we undervalue those who are discounted and then persevere.”

“It was absolutely breathtaking, obviously the music was spot on. I almost forgot it was live musicians, because everything was just perfect. And it was just easy to listen to. The choreography, the costumes, just the movement, the way they act, the dancers express themselves, and tell the story. It was like nothing I’d ever seen before,” said Katie Skrzat, a music teacher at the Collegium Charter School. “Having the traditional Western instruments with the traditional Chinese instruments blending together for the beautiful storytelling was just something that I’ve never seen.”

Shen Yun will perform in Newark, New Jersey, from April 29 through May 3.
