Shen Yun Performing Arts arrived at the Detroit Opera House in Detroit, Michigan, on April 24. Before the performance, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield issued a proclamation welcoming Shen Yun, stating, “The upcoming performances offer residents and visitors an opportunity to experience a unique artistic program that blends classical Chinese dance, orchestral music, and storytelling inspired by traditional legends, historical themes, and cultural values.”

Audience members commented on the beauty and artistry of the dancers after watching the performance.

“The music was absolutely, unbelievably well written, performed, and synchronized with the dancers. The visual effects were much more than I thought. It was a wonderful performance,” said David Arney, the president of a consulting company.

Christine Kuzma, a business owner, said, “I loved it, the performance, the dancing, the music. It was all lovely.”

Ron Redmond, a business owner, said, “The performers were amazing. ... The opera singing part was a very big surprise. The acrobats were incredible. The dancers were wonderful. It was great.”

Brian Carry, a former hotel general manager, said, “Everything was just so well timed, and this technology with the interactive screen was something I was not expecting at all, and just flawless.”

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive the 5,000 years of traditional culture of China before communism. The company also exposes the Communist Party’s persecution of faith, and it is one of the reasons that Shen Yun cannot perform in China.

Ms. Kuzma said, “I know that it isn’t as readily available because of the CCP; people are not able to express themselves and participate fully in the way they would like to. So I think this is an excellent foundation to let everyone know, to get the word out, and to try to do what we can to help the Chinese people.”

Mr. Redmond said, “My son is always talking about how great China was before communism, and he wanted to see it. He kept nudging me to tell me, 'this represents that,' or 'that represents this.' And it was great to see that in the performance come to life.”

Based in New York, Shen Yun has been touring the world since 2006 and has since grown to eight different companies. Shen Yun’s performance also features singers, whose lyrics resonated with many of the audience members.

“How beautiful, absolutely touching,” said Tammy Boomer, an entrepreneur. “I can relate, because I can apply it to my faith.”

“The time that was put in showed the effort behind it. It paid off,” she said.

John Boomer, a construction business owner, said, “Thank you so much for all your hard work. I really appreciate it.”

“Thank you for bringing this art to us,” said Mr. Arney. “Keep doing what you’re doing. Don’t pay attention to the noise out there. I know they’re under a lot of scrutiny from the CCP, and their art is appreciated, and I think it will be enduring.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Newark, New Jersey, from April 29 to May 3.
