New York-based Shen Yun Performing Arts performed in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Feb. 27 and Feb. 28. The company showcased 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from before communism. Audiences praised Shen Yun’s artistry and shared their impressions of the performance.

“I am delighted because the work was exquisite—exquisite from every artistic and cultural standpoint,” said Rafael Cruzado, an actor and theater specialist.

“Spectacular,” said Brenda Vega, a business owner. “It’s something very amazing. This is for the whole family.”

“Wonderful, magical,” said Eda Burgos Malavé, an author and a retired humanities professor who previously taught at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. “It is a magical show, very sensitive, with a lot of spirituality.”

At the heart of every Shen Yun performance is classical Chinese dance, widely regarded as one of the most complete and comprehensive dance forms in the world. It’s brought to life on stage by the company’s elite classical Chinese dancers.

Mr. Cruzado said Shen Yun dancers’ discipline stood out to him the most.

“The discipline and the commitment to enjoying what they do, because they are warriors. They are warriors because not everyone is prepared to do that,” he said.

“But they have a preparation—a discipline of mind and body—that they couldn’t work without. I am certain of that because that is the training of the body and the artist. But they are more than artists because, as I said, they are people trained to do this, and not everyone is.”

Ms. Vega commented, “[Shen Yun] has many techniques and many things that are truly amazing and that one doesn’t expect on stage.” She added that Shen Yun “leaves everyone astonished.”

“It is magnificent. Truly, I am enjoying it,” she said.

Shen Yun literally means “the beauty of divine beings dancing.” Behind the scenes, Shen Yun artists practice Falun Dafa, a spiritual discipline that teaches truthfulness, compassion, and forbearance. This, they say, is what makes their company able to truly spread traditional Chinese culture.

“The energy they projected,” Mr. Cruzado remarked. “ Because they could perform certain steps or routines that might be rehearsed, but their energy, what they radiated, that was present there. And it is what envelops and charms all of us who watch the show. It is a marvel.”

Mr. Malavé shared: “We feel so relaxed and with a sensitivity at superior levels. It is truly beautiful, at every level.”

“It emanates a lot of peace,” Ms. Vega pointed out. “A lot of peace, a lot of joy. And the dynamics and everything else, I love it. It really is something that can build you up and take you to another level to seek the simplicity of things. I love it, I really do.”

Mr. Cruzado said Shen Yun portrays “happiness and a perspective of devotion.” He also added that when watching Shen Yun dancers, he witnessed “what a human being is capable of doing when they are in love with something or have a clear vision of life.”

Mr. Malavé remarked that Shen Yun is a performance that is “truly worth coming to see” in the modern world, and that Shen Yun presents “profound spirituality and an elevated aesthetic sense that goes well beyond ordinary beauty.”

“I feel it is a show that one must come to see,” he emphasized.

Mr. Cruzado believes everyone should see Shen Yun.

“This is the first time I’ve seen it, and I am surprised and delighted. I invite everyone to come see it because it is a unique experience—truly unique—and you will see it when you see it,” he said. “I congratulate them with all my heart, and may they keep coming to Puerto Rico so we can continue enjoying such a complete show.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Las Vegas, Nevada, from March 5 to March 8.
