On May 1, audience members in Mexico City, Mexico, welcomed Shen Yun Performing Arts with warm applause. Through classical Chinese dance and music, Shen Yun aims to share the beauty of 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture.

“Spirituality, perfection, harmony,” said Lavibe Abdala, an entrepreneur. “The music truly touches your soul. The instruments, Chinese, Eastern, are played in a divine way. Everything flows perfectly. The costumes are divine, flawless. They look amazing. The way the dancers handle them, the jumps, it’s all truly spectacular. Really, spectacular.”

“The [3D] backdrop gives you the opportunity to follow the story, to continue the story without interruption. Like the journey they make to the heavens, where they are going from Earth to the clouds and into space. It really gives you the opportunity to go with them, to fly with them,” said José Luis Rivera, an insurance specialist.

“It’s beautiful. Both the music and the dance immerse us in Chinese culture and things we didn’t know. I would describe it as beautiful and breathtaking,” said Juan Alberto Alcántara Sotelo, a software developer.

Theatergoers said they were delighted to see traditional Chinese culture and values. Those traditions find their roots in ancient China, from before communism, and are believed to be inspired by the Divine.

Edgar Trueba Pasipuente, a lawyer, said, “I think [traditional culture] is fundamental, and I think it’s beautiful. This is a tribute to humanity, a tribute to culture, and to what we as humanity have created. Art transcends borders, centuries, and cultures.”

“It’s very moving because of the message they bring to us today, in such a materialized society, is about returning to ancestral cultures. To return to ancestral cultures, just as in Mexico, we’ve had great spiritual influence. China, without a doubt, I believe, is the mother of cultures,” said Julio César Alcázar Reyes, a Marine captain.

“The spiritual culture that they have, which I believe still contributes a lot to humanity, and we must ensure this ancient culture is never lost,” said Joel Zilli Sanchez, a company superintendent.

Shen Yun will be performing in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on May 9 and 10.
