Shen Yun Performing Arts gave a stunning performance to audiences in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Feb. 28, presenting 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture on stage. Based in New York, Shen Yun’s mission is to share with the world the beauty of China before communism.

“It’s unique, it’s unique, and everything is incredible,” said Gladys Núñez, a former Puerto Rican dancer and performer. “Everything is so well coordinated, it’s very powerful.”

“It is a great show,” said Jose Martínez, president of the Puerto Rico Actors’ Guild. “It has special effects that you don’t see in other dance groups. And all that ancient tradition that is reflected in each of the shows is wonderful. And the dancers are excellent.”

Florentino Rodriguez Cruz, a TV and theater producer, said Shen Yun is “a show that transforms you.”

“Because here the performers don’t just dance—they are acrobats, dancers, actors, and mimes,” he said, adding, “It’s a show where the lighting and costumes are spectacular, and the production is exquisite.”

Shen Yun’s performances mainly showcase classical Chinese dance, which has a history of thousands of years. Shen Yun also features many of the world’s leading classical Chinese dancers.

“Tremendous discipline, coordination, those extensions she has,” said Ms. Núñez. “That’s not easy, it’s not easy. It’s very powerful, but the results are fabulous.”

Mr. Cruz said, “I was completely unaware of ancient Chinese culture. I mean, we studied basic things in school, but all the choreography has a message, a story. And that story, if you analyze it, has meaning.”

Mr. Martínez said, “It’s an important experience in one’s life to learn about all that tradition. ... And all the special effects. And those excellent dancers who do it so, so well. And they make the show a great show—wonderful.”

Ms. Núñez said she perceived a “spiritual message in everything.”

“It’s a very beautiful message, spiritual too, you see?” she said. “The messages and a culture that are very different for us.”

Mr. Cruz said that he hopes more people can see Shen Yun.

“As a producer, I urge my fellow producers and the Puerto Rican public to support this work, because it is worth seeing. It is a feast for the ears, the eyes, the sight, everything, the palate. It is a first-class theatrical feast.

“Come, because you’ll be delighted, you’ll see exquisite work, choreography, a first-class production,” he said.

Shen Yun will be performing in Phoenix, Arizona, from March 5 to 8.
