A man was killed in a carjacking in Las Vegas on April 11.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), the victim was napping in his car on April 11 when the suspect entered the vehicle and drove away at high speed. The suspect crashed into another vehicle, then a boulder, then a pole.

Speaking at a press conference, an LVMPD spokeswoman said the victim was in a Walmart parking lot, waiting for a family member to finish her shopping. He was sitting in the passenger seat of a black Hyundai Sonata, asleep, while the car was running. At that point, the suspect, later identified as 55-year-old Harold Allen, opened the unlocked driver's side door and climbed into the vehicle. He then drove away at high speed.

The victim's family member came out of the store, saw the car was missing, and alerted police.

Meanwhile, Allen was driving the car when he collided with a minivan, causing the van to spin out at the corner of West Charleston Boulevard and South Essex Drive. He crashed into a boulder and a pole.

Police received reports of the accident just before 11 a.m. on April 11 and responded to the scene. They found the driver with minor injuries and the passenger in critical condition. Paramedics rushed the passenger to the hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the minivan sustained minor injuries, and the passenger was uninjured.

Allen was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center for multiple felony charges to include open murder with a deadly weapon, grand larceny of a motor vehicle and kidnapping, 1st degree. The spokeswoman said that Allen has a lengthy criminal history. However, police called the incident a crime of opportunity, since the suspect and victim had no knowledge of each other.
Local news outlets later identified the victim as 37-year-old Benito Saragoza. Allen missed a court appearance on April 12 for medical reasons but will be in court again on April 14.
On April 7, a Pomona man was charged with three counts of murder after prosecutors said he deliberately rammed his truck into a police cruiser, then sped through residential streets at more than 100 mph before broadsiding a car and killing a couple whose baby was due in just three weeks, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.

Marshall Campbell Judson, 31, faces a total of eight counts, including charges of fleeing a pursuing peace officer causing death, assault with a deadly weapon upon a peace officer, and carrying a loaded, unregistered concealed firearm, the DA's office announced April 7.

The victims—Marc Anthony Trejo Saldivar, 26, and his girlfriend Jennifer Alejandra Loera Zarco, 25—were pronounced dead at the scene. Loera Zarco was nine months pregnant, with an April 20 due date.
