A police officer in South Carolina has been fired and arrested after pointing a gun at a colleague.
Michael Debiase was a detective with the Myrtle Beach Police Department. He was arrested on June 2 after an incident on May 30 in which he allegedly pointed his service weapon at a patrolman who was microwaving fish at his headquarters briefing room.
"Our employees are entrusted with significant responsibility, and with that comes an expectation of professionalism, integrity, sound judgment, and respect for others," the department wrote.
"This incident does not reflect the values demonstrated by the men and women of the Myrtle Beach Police Department every day. However, it does demonstrate our commitment to accountability and our willingness to address conduct that falls short of our expectations. The Myrtle Beach Police Department takes violations of policy and professional standards seriously. We remain committed to maintaining the trust of our community by holding our employees accountable and ensuring they uphold the high standards expected of those who serve the City of Myrtle Beach."
Christopher Gillum, 45, of Chapel Hill, was taken into custody without incident on the evening of April 22 at a Hampton Inn & Suites in Destin, the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office shared in a Facebook statement.
Officials said Gillum was wanted by the Department of Public Safety in Orleans Parish on terroristic threats charges after officials learned he allegedly planned to travel to New Orleans to carry out a mass shooting.
Authorities did not specify which festival Gillum allegedly planned to target. However, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival—one of the city's biggest music events—ran between April 24 and May 3.
During Gillum's arrest, deputies seized a handgun and approximately 200 rounds of ammunition from his hotel room, officials said. He was booked into the Okaloosa County jail in Crestview, where he is being held pending extradition to Louisiana.
