A recall of frozen tater tots has been expanded to nearly 650,000 pounds across 28 states after additional batches were found to be potentially contaminated with pieces of plastic.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced last week that 21,557 30-pound cases of Ore-Ida brand tater tots had been pulled over concerns that they may contain "small hard plastic fragments."

The expanded batch codes are 1005475084, 1005476076, 1005477012, and 1005498350 and feature the use-by dates of Oct. 6, 2027, Oct. 7, 2027, Oct. 8, 2027, and Nov. 3, 2027.

The frozen potato product, which was manufactured by McCain Foods, was distributed to foodservice facilities, but was not sold in grocery stores, the FDA noted.

The agency said 67 cases of McCain Foods' Sonic Tots featuring the batch code 1005486334 were also recalled for the same reason.

Both products were distributed across 28 states, including Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

McCain Foods first issued the recall in December 2025, which covered 21,256 cases of Ore-Ida Tater Tots with batch codes 1005479808, 1005477924, 1005478883, 1005480444, 1005480875, 1005481627, and 1005481770.

Nearly 17,600 cases of Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrel were also pulled for potentially containing "clear hard plastic fragments." Batch codes included 1005482717, 1005483735, 1005484702, 1005485462, and 1005485660.

The affected items were distributed in Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The recalls are classified as Class II alerts, meaning the consumption of the affected products "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences," according to the FDA.

A number of school cafeterias across the country were impacted by the recalls.

Washoe County School District in northern Nevada, told local media outlets in December 2025 that it had discovered "glass-like" materials in tater tots it received the previous month. KRNV-DT reported that one student sustained a minor cut to a finger from the fragments.

The school district said it promptly removed the tater tots from the menus of more than a dozen of its elementary schools and alerted the FDA and the local health department about the issue.

"Ensuring the safety of our students and staff is our highest priority, and we acted swiftly out of an abundance of caution," school officials said.

Orange County Public Schools in Florida also told parents in January that it had removed tater tots from its school cafeteria menus after being notified of the recall.
