The Massachusetts motocross community is mourning the death of 17-year-old rider Alex Mechachonis after a crash at a practice track in Brookfield last week.
Mechachonis, a Granville native and rising motocross competitor, died following the April 28 crash at MX Twenty-Three on Quaboag Street, according to statements from New England Sports Committee Motocross (NESC).
“Sadly, we have to report that NESC rider, Alex Mechachonis, passed away after crashing at a practice track earlier this week,” NESC Motocross
said in a social media statement. “Alex had been racing since 2022 and loved it very much.”
The organization said Mechachonis earned three championships during the 2025 NESC Spring Series and had quickly become a familiar face in the regional motocross community.
“Alex would have turned 18 this year,” the statement said. “He leaves behind a loving family and many friends in the moto community.”
Friends, relatives, and fellow riders remembered Mechachonis as a passionate competitor known for his kindness and dedication to the sport.
"We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of Alex Mechachonis, a passionate dirt bike racer, friend, and loved member of the community. Alex brought energy, kindness, and dedication to everything he did, and his loss is deeply felt by everyone who knew him," said an official
GoFundMe campaign created to support his family. Organizers said donations would help cover funeral expenses and ease the family's financial burden.
MX Twenty-Three also shared condolences online following the teenager’s death. “There are no words to describe the heartbreak and sadness we all feel here at MX23,” the track said in a
statement on social media. “All of us in the motocross community are family and when this happens it hits hard.”
Michael Mechachonis, Alex’s uncle,
thanked supporters in a social media post and encouraged people to share photos and videos honoring his nephew.
“If you can share this video and help make them light up the heavens for my nephew, little Alex. I’d appreciate it,” he said in his video tribute.
“We love every one of you guys,” he wrote. “Thank you for the support.”
Brookfield Police Chief Michael Blanchard
confirmed Mechachonis’ death to Boston 25 News and said the Massachusetts Environmental Police are leading the investigation into the crash.
NTD reached out to the Massachusetts Environmental Police for additional information, but did not receive a response before publication.
According to the Boston Herald, the MX23 Brookfield track has been connected to previous fatal incidents, including a 42-year-old Rhode Island man who died at the facility in October 2024, after an 18-year-old biker from Worcester died in October 2016.
