This small Russian town has a tram system. It’s the smallest Russian town to have one. It was built by German POWs. Despite faster, more profitable transportation, residents still enjoy taking the tram, and the government still funds it.
The tram still has a nice forest route, too. Some residents are still fans.Margarita Faber talks about why she still takes the tram, “It’s faster by bus. (But) if you have an appointment, you have to walk and wait (for bus), but by tram you reach (your destination) in time (knowing the schedule).”
A lot of the business for the tram died out when the German POWs returned home and the population of Volchansk shrank. Rampant theft was also a factor.
Alexander Vervein, Mayor of Volchansk talked about the significance of the tram, “Our tram was introduced into the Records Book of Russia. That’s a very significant fact for us. Thus the tram for us is like a symbol of the town.”
The tram couldn’t get into the Guinness World Records, since there is a smaller town with a tram in Germany.
