On July 1, a company owner jumped to his death from the 7th floor of the Saga International Shopping Mall in Xi'an, China, triggering large-scale public protests.
Over the past two days, the topic "A person jumped from the Xi'an Saga Shopping Mall" has continuously topped the hot search charts on Chinese social platforms.
According to online information, the deceased was Yan Peng, the chairman of Shaanxi Lihe Trading Company. The Saga Shopping Mall, where his store was located, had fined Yan's company nearly 1.7 million (11.456 million RMB) for reasons such as sales staff improperly using vouchers.
At the same time, the mall withheld payment for goods and refused to settle accounts, causing Yan's capital chain to break. Left with no way out, he fell to his death from the Saga International Shopping Mall at around 1:00 p.m. on July 1.
The announcement also disclosed that Peng had been in low spirits and had shown suicidal tendencies as early as May: "On May 25, 2026, Yan climbed over the atrium railing in the mall intending to end his life, but was fortunately rescued in time by on-site staff and merchants."
The notice further admitted that due to the overall market downturn, Peng's company was performing poorly and had been suffering continuous long-term losses at its stores in other major shopping malls, while also carrying massive debts.
Family and Employees Protest, Suppressed by Police
Staff at the Xi'an Saga Shopping Mall quickly moved the body, which sparked outrage among the family, employees, and the public. This led to a prolonged protest in the plaza that lasted from day to night.Employees gathered at the entrance of Saga, and the crowd grew larger and larger. Some people even began singing the national anthem: "Arise, arise, those who refuse to be slaves! ”
“The Chinese nation has reached its most critical time, everyone is forced to give a final roar."
- "Shame on you [Saga]! Murder for money!"
- "Saga murders for money!"
- "Saga bullies people by relying on its power, fining a merchant over ten million!"
In the early hours of the morning, the plaza in front of the Saga Mall was largely cleared out.
A female college student arrived at the scene to document and record audio, stating: "We can already imagine what happened here today. There is still a partial police presence stationed at the entrance. I hope society can bring justice to the victim."
