Why the World Should Worry About China Taking Taiwan; Will Xi Follow Putin’s Lead?

It wasn’t so long ago that communist China was offering Taiwan Hong Kong as the example of how ‘great things could be if it submitted to its autocratic control. “Well, you can’t really use that argument anymore. They’ve destroyed Hong Kong,” says China economist and author of “Beyond the Belt and Road: China’s Global Expansion.”

At a time when Taiwan is, by many indicators, at its most averse to ‘stronger ties with China,’ it faces heightened danger of Chinese communist attack in view of the path set by Vladimir Putin in Ukraine. However, according to Dr. Tzu-yun Su, Taiwan is far from being a sitting duck. Dr. Su is a senior analyst at Taiwan’s Institute for National Defense and Security Research.

In the first part of this two-part feature, I explore with two Asian foreign-relations experts whether it really is a case of “today Ukraine, tomorrow Taiwan.”
