Trump Leads Biden in National Poll, Maintains 47 Percent Support

Former President Donald Trump leads President Joe Biden by four points in a potential 2024 presidential match-up, according to a new poll.

A survey conducted by Emerson College released on Wednesday finds that President Trump has maintained his previous level of support of 47 percent, while President Biden has seen his numbers drop from 45 percent to 43 percent, with an additional 10 percent of respondents unsure which candidate they would vote for.

The eyes of the nation are trained on President Biden as the likely Democrat nominee for 2024 and President Trump as the likely Republican nominee. This would cause a 2024 presidential race in the general election to match up to the 2020 race, the results of which have caused continuing tension nationwide.

The survey indicated that the number of undecided voters and the number of those who voted for neither President Trump nor President Biden increased if a third-party candidate were added to the hypothetical situation.

When third-party and independent candidates Robert Kennedy Jr., Cornel West, and Jill Stein are added to the ballot, President Trump’s support decreases to 42 percent, and President Biden’s falls to 36 percent.

Compared with this time last year, when President Biden was leading President Trump, the former president’s recent surge in popularity is all the more surprising. Female voters showed the biggest drop in support for the current president.

“Last November, Biden led Trump by four points, whereas this November, he trails Trump by four,” Spencer Kimball, the executive director of Emerson College Polling, said in a press release.

“Several key groups have shifted in the past year: Biden led at this time last year among women by seven points, which has reduced to a point this year.”

The survey pointed out significant changes when compared with a similar national poll conducted last year. One notable change is in the level of support among various groups of people.

For example, there has been a 15-point net shift among black voters who support President Biden. Last year, the level of support among this group was at 61 percent, but this year it has decreased to around 47 percent. There are also changes among Latino voters, voters under 50, and voters with four-year college degrees.

“The president’s disapproval has stayed the same this month, while his approval has dropped four points,” Mr. Kimball said. “The president’s approval is the lowest it has been this calendar year, but similar to what it was this time last year when his approval was at 39 percent.”

The poll also explored voter excitement about the upcoming presidential election, revealing that 64 percent of voters are either very (35 percent) or somewhat (29 percent) excited. Excitement varies among candidate supporters, with 46 percent of Trump voters expressing very high excitement compared with 29 percent of Biden voters. Only 26 percent of voters under 30 are reported to be very excited about the election.

In a general election matchup between Nikki Haley and Joe Biden, the candidates are tied at 38 percent, with 25 percent of voters undecided. President Biden’s job approval rating among voters stands at 38 percent, with a 50 percent disapproval rate. A plurality of voters (37 percent) rated the president’s handling of the situation in Israel as “poor.”

When asked to name the most pressing issue facing the country, 39 percent said the economy, followed by immigration (13 percent), threats to democracy (12 percent), health care (10 percent), crime (8 percent), abortion access (5 percent), and education (5 percent).

The survey also delved into the Democratic and Republican primaries. In the Democratic Primary, 66 percent of Democrats plan to support President Biden, while in the Republican Primary, President Trump leads at 64 percent. On the generic congressional 2024 ballot, 44 percent plan to vote for the Republican candidate, and 43 percent plan to support the Democratic candidate.

The Emerson College Polling national survey—funded by the college—was conducted Nov. 17–20, 2023, with a sample of 1,475 registered voters.
