President Donald Trump announced on Sept. 19 that the Republican Party would hold a convention for next year’s midterm elections.
“We will have one at the highest level. It will be both fun and very productive.”
“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024,” he stated on Truth Social.
“The results are incredible, a record pace!!! In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before.”
National party conventions are usually held in presidential election years, where party delegates formally select the party’s nominees for president and vice president of the country.
The Democratic Party has an identical arrangement of party conventions, the planning of which is often coordinated with the Republican Party to ensure each convention runs unimpeded.
Redistricting
In recent weeks, Republican and Democratic lawmakers in some states have also been engaged in congressional redistricting battles seeking to expand their party’s representation in the House of Representatives. In August, Republican-led Texas adopted a new congressional map that will potentially flip five Democratic seats in the 2026 midterm elections, prompting a response from California’s Democratic lawmakers, who introduced their own redrawn congressional map, which requires voter approval due to California’s redistricting rules.
