Trump Says Republican Party Will Hold Convention for 2026 Midterm Election

The president stated that the party would determine the time and place of the convention at a later date.

President Donald Trump announced on Sept. 19 that the Republican Party would hold a convention for next year’s midterm elections.

“The Republican Party wants, very badly, a Convention for the 2026 Midterm Election,” Trump stated in a Truth Social post.

“We will have one at the highest level. It will be both fun and very productive.”

Trump stated in an earlier post that the party would determine the time and place at a later date.

“The Republicans are going to do a Midterm Convention in order to show the great things we have done since the Presidential Election of 2024,” he stated on Truth Social.

Trump first floated the initiative last month, saying that holding a national convention ahead of the midterm elections would give the party a chance to showcase his administration’s efforts to voters.

“We have raised far more money than the Democrats and are having a great time fixing all of the Country Destroying mistakes made by the Biden Administration, and watching the USA heal and prosper,” he wrote.

“The results are incredible, a record pace!!! In that light, I am thinking of recommending a National Convention to the Republican Party, just prior to the Midterms. It has never been done before.”

National party conventions are usually held in presidential election years, where party delegates formally select the party’s nominees for president and vice president of the country.

The Democratic Party has an identical arrangement of party conventions, the planning of which is often coordinated with the Republican Party to ensure each convention runs unimpeded.

Kiersten Pels, press secretary for the Republican National Committee, told The Epoch Times in August that Trump is “leading with bold, innovative ideas to energize our Party and keep us on the path to victory.”

The Epoch Times has reached out to the Democratic National Committee for comment, and did not receive a response by publication time.

Redistricting

In recent weeks, Republican and Democratic lawmakers in some states have also been engaged in congressional redistricting battles seeking to expand their party’s representation in the House of Representatives.

In August, Republican-led Texas adopted a new congressional map that will potentially flip five Democratic seats in the 2026 midterm elections, prompting a response from California’s Democratic lawmakers, who introduced their own redrawn congressional map, which requires voter approval due to California’s redistricting rules.

On Sept. 12, Republicans in the Missouri Senate approved a measure that would split the state’s urban Fifth Congressional District into three existing, but redrawn districts.
