President Donald Trump's signature will appear on future U.S. paper currency in honor of the 250th anniversary of the United States, marking the first time this has happened for a sitting president, according to the U.S. Treasury Department.

“Under President Trump’s leadership, we are on a path toward unprecedented economic growth, lasting dollar dominance, and fiscal strength and stability,” Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent said in a March 26 press release.

“There is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of our great country and President Donald J. Trump than U.S dollar bills bearing his name, and it is only appropriate that this historic currency be issued at the Semiquincentennial.”

Although past presidents' signatures are not on the actual bills, their faces are.

The one-dollar bill features George Washington, the two-dollar bill features Thomas Jefferson, and the five-dollar bill depicts Abraham Lincoln. Andrew Jackson is on the $20 bill and Ulysses Grant is on the $50 bill. Other currency features Alexander Hamilton ($10 bill) and Benjamin Franklin ($100 bill), although the two were not presidents.

The first $2 note was authorized in 1775 by the Continental Congress.

"As the 250th anniversary of our great nation approaches, American currency will continue to stand as a symbol of prosperity, strength, and the unshakable spirit of the American people under President Trump’s leadership,” U.S. Treasurer Brandon Beach said in a press release.

“The President’s mark on history as the architect of America’s Golden Age economic revival is undeniable. Printing his signature on the American currency is not only appropriate, but also well deserved.”

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved designs for a 24-karat commemorative gold coin featuring Trump as part of its March meeting, according to commission materials.
