Independence Day officially arrives on Saturday this year, marking the nation's 250th anniversary following the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Many Americans will celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks displays, patriotic parades, backyard barbecues, and other themed festivities, while many businesses adjust their schedules for the holiday weekend.
As with other federal observances, many government offices and agencies that offer weekend hours, including public libraries, will be shuttered for the Fourth of July. The same goes for most banking institutions, though ATMs and online or mobile banking services will still be available.
Since the holiday falls on a Saturday this year, the federal government will observe Independence Day on Friday. However, the vast majority of banks and credit unions will be open on July 3, including Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Chase, per their websites. Some local branches may have limited hours, so it is best to call ahead or check their websites for current hours.
Costco will remain open on July 3, but all warehouse locations will close for Independence Day. Other major retailers and grocery store chains will largely remain open on July 3 and July 4, among them Walmart, Target, Safeway, Kroger, and Publix, though holiday hours may vary. Third-party services located inside or attached to the businesses, such as pharmacies or optical centers, may be closed or have limited hours.
