Monday, Feb. 16, marks Presidents' Day, when many Americans across the country will be off work for an extended three-day weekend as businesses close in observance of the federal holiday.

Officially known as Washington's Birthday, Presidents' Day was established in the late 1800s to honor America's first commander in chief, George Washington, who was born on Feb. 22, 1732. In the early 1970s, the holiday was moved to be observed on the third Monday of February and is now widely recognized as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents, both past and present.

As with most federal holidays, the vast majority of government offices and agencies, including courthouses, DMVs, and public libraries, along with most public school and colleges, will be shuttered for the day.

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) confirmed that all of its locations will also be closed, with regular mail delivery resuming on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

"Customers are reminded that when Post Offices are closed, they can still access many postal products and services through usps.com and self-service kiosks available in select lobbies nationwide," the delivery service notes online.
UPS will operate normally, though services that rely on USPS for deliveries, such as UPS Ground Saver and UPS Mail Innovations, may be delayed by one business day. FedEx will also be delivering packages, with some services running on a modified schedule, which may impact pickup and delivery times.

The U.S. stock and bond markets, including the Nasdaq and New York Stock Exchange, will be closed for trading on Presidents' Day. The same goes for most banking institutions and credit unions, including Wells Fargo, Bank of America, and Chase Bank.

However, staying true to its moniker of "America's Most Convenient Bank," TD Bank, which is based on the East Coast, will keep its branches open for regular business hours on Feb. 16. For institutions that are closed, ATMs and online or mobile banking services will still be available.

Major retailers will largely remain open, with many national chains offering special Presidents' Day sales, among them Walmart, Home Depot, and Best Buy. However, it's always best to confirm local business hours before heading over.

Grocery store chains, such as Safeway, Kroger, and Publix, and major pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens will be open, though hours may vary depending on location.

Most restaurants will not be closed for the federal holiday, but to avoid surprises, it's best to call ahead or check their websites for current hours.
