A Finnish national who has lived in the United States illegally for more than two decades was arrested in New Smyrna Beach after she allegedly threw coffee at a mother, her infant son, and their pet dog, federal immigration authorities said.
The alleged attack happened when the mother was walking her infant son and dog on Quail Ranch Road, with the disagreement over the unleashed dog escalating when Jaaskelainen allegedly threw coffee on the dog, then threw more coffee on the mother, which also landed on her 1-year-old child.
No serious injuries were reported to either the child or the dog. However, the alleged assault drew an immediate response from law enforcement and federal involvement.
Jaaskelainen was arrested and charged with battery and domestic violence by local authorities. She was booked into the Volusia County Jail following the arrest.
Immigration officials said Jaaskelainen entered the country legally on April 17, 1999, using a B2 tourist visa that expired on July 16, 1999. She remained in the United States illegally for 26 years without leaving as required.
"She is now facing charges for battery and domestic violence. ICE lodged an arrest detainer to ensure she can never victimize another American family," said Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin.
By lodging the detainer, ICE signaled its intention to take Jaaskelainen into federal custody if she is released on bail or after posting bond. The detainer effectively prevents local authorities from releasing her without coordinating with federal immigration enforcement.
