Authorities in Georgia have charged a 14-year-old boy with murder in connection with the death of a 12-year-old, who was fatally shot inside his bedroom in Atlanta over the weekend.

According to a press release from the Atlanta Police Department, officers found the boy suffering a gunshot wound after being called to a home on the 1800 block of Lathrop Street Southeast on Saturday just before 2 p.m. following a report of a shooting.

The 12-year-old—identified in a GoFundMe fundraiser and by local media reports as Cameron Coney—was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite life-saving efforts, he was later pronounced dead.

Speaking with Atlanta News First, Cameron's family members said some of his friends had visited that day and had brought a gun with them.

"It was told that one of them pointed a gun at all of the friends in there, and when he got to Cameron–the gun was touching Cameron’s chest–and he shot. He pulled the trigger," the boy's aunt, Latosha Coney, told the station.

After interviewing those who were present in the home at the time the shooting occurred, homicide detectives were able to obtain an arrest warrant on Sunday for the 14-year-old juvenile, whose identity has not been publicly released. He was taken into custody and transferred to the Metro Youth Detention Center without incident, officials said.

Cameron is survived by his mother, Qualesha Coney, two older sisters, and a younger brother.

On the GoFundMe page, which has raised more than $3,000 as of Monday morning, Qualesha Coney remembered her son as "a silly, playful young boy who was known for making people laugh with his jokes."

"He loved football, attended Long Middle School, and was deeply loved by his family and everyone who knew him," she added. "What makes this tragedy even more heartbreaking is that Cameron was shot in his own room, in the place where he should have felt the most safe — his home. No family should ever have to endure this kind of pain."

Many of Cameron's family and friends released balloons in his memory at a candlelight vigil held Sunday evening. At the gathering, his aunt, Destinee Coney, told Fox 5 Atlanta that she hopes justice is served.

"We hope that we get justice for Cameron, that’s our sole hope," she said. "And we hope that parents will know where their kids are ... we hope that Cameron's name forever lives on."
