Authorities in Maryland have detained a 14-year-old boy in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident that killed a 3-year-old girl in Southwest Baltimore over the weekend.

According to a media advisory from the Baltimore Police Department, officers responded just after 1 p.m. on Saturday to a report of a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on the 1800 block of West Pratt Street, near South Monroe Street, in the Carrollton Ridge neighborhood.

Once they arrived at the scene, officers found the 3-year-old girl suffering from severe life-threatening injuries. She was subsequently transported to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Officials said the vehicle believed to be responsible for the crash left the scene following the accident. However, officers were able to track down the vehicle not long after and detained the 14-year-old, who was allegedly behind the wheel at the time of the collision.

Officials said the vehicle had been reported stolen by a family member of the boy shortly before the crash occurred. No additional details were provided about the incident, and the teen's identity has not been released.

Gloria Boyce, a local resident who witnessed the fatal hit-and-run, told WBAL-TV 11 News in Baltimore that it sounded like two cars had collided.

"But when I jumped up, I seen the lady on the sidewalk holding her child, and her child looked lifeless. And the other three kids that she had were screaming," Boyce said. "I didn’t know what was going on until I seen the child, so I tried to help her other babies, you know, try to keep them together because they were screaming. They were traumatized."
The 14-year-old boy was below the legal driving age in Maryland. State law requires drivers to be at least 15 years and 9 months old to obtain a learner's permit. Provisional licenses are issued to drivers who are at least 16 years and 6 months old, while a standard driver's license is available to those who have reached 18 years old.

It is unclear whether the teenager has been formally charged in connection with the girl's death, the hit-and-run collision, or the alleged use of a stolen vehicle. NTD reached out to the Baltimore Police Department for an update, but a response was not received by publication time.

Officials said the department's Crash Team is investigating the incident. Anyone with information about the crash has been asked to contact the detectives leading the case directly at (410) 396-2606.
