A gunman opened fire Monday at the Islamic Center of San Diego, killing three people, after San Diego police received a warning call about a potentially armed and dangerous juvenile more than an hour before the shooting began.
Officers responded to the 7000 block of Eckstrom Avenue—roughly nine miles north of downtown—after reports of an active shooter, police said in a post on X. Authorities urged the public to avoid the area.
Aerial footage showed more than a dozen children being led hand-in-hand out of the parking lot, which was surrounded by police vehicles.
Gov. Gavin Newsom was briefed on the incident. "We are grateful to the first responders on the scene working to protect the community and urge everyone to follow guidance from local authorities," his office posted on X.
SDPD later announced the threat had been neutralized, establishing a media staging area at the northwest corner of Lindbergh Park.
