Jason Momoa, star of “Aquaman” and HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” opened up about a time before his fame, when he was too broke to even take a flight home.

On Monday, May 27, Momoa took to Instagram with a throwback post to the early days of filming “Game of Thrones.” In the image, a smiling Momoa can be seen resting in the back of a van “off the road” on an air mattresses in “some quiet parking lot” in Donegal, Ireland.

“It was an amazing simple moment with my best friend [Brian Andrew Mendoza],” he wrote on Instagram. “While filming GOT we had a lil break We were to [sic] broke to fly home so we rented a panel van aka UHAUL in Belfast and drove around beautiful amazing IRELAND searching for the greatest pint of Guinness. Turns out it’s perfect everywhere.”

“So many wonderful people and stories I treasure those times It was the simplest moments I remember the most,” he added.

Momoa also wrote about his family and how spending so much time on the road can be hard.

“I still miss my family. Been a long road and I feel like I’m just getting started,” he wrote.

Since starring as Khal Drogo, the Dothraki chieftain in “Game of Thrones,” Momoa has gone on to star in a number of projects, most notably as Arthur Curry—Aquaman—in the DC Extended Universe.

He first appeared as the character in “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016), and then in “Justice League” (2017), before getting his own origin story, according to IMDb.

Momoa gave a shoutout on Instagram when “Aquaman” passed the billion-dollar mark.

“BILLION DOLLAR UNDERDOG,” he wrote on Instagram. “from baywatch to making what once was the most disrespected superhero into a billion dollar movie.”

He added that, “no one gets to the top without the people that love them. My success is from my fans. All my aloha to everyone that had a hand in making this movie. Mahalo Zack for choosing me and mahalo James for creating this beautiful world.”

“Aquaman 2” is planned for 2022, which should give Momoa enough time to grow back his iconic beard.

Last month, Momoa shaved his beard for the first time in seven years.

“I think 2012 is the last time I shaved,” he said in the YouTube video. “Goodbye Drogo. Goodbye Arthur Curry,” he said, referring to his “Game of Thrones” and “Aquaman” characters, respectively.

“I’m shaving this beast off, it’s time to make a change. A change for the better… for my kids, for your kids, the world. Let’s make a positive change for the health of our planet. Let’s clean up our oceans and our land. Join me on this journey. Let’s make a switch to INFINITELY RECYCLABLE aluminum. Water in cans, NOT plastic,” he wrote in the caption of the video.

“I wanted to make my own water so I could be an example. So I had a product I could take out to give to the world. And that I could take to other companies in hope that they could do the same,” he said in the video. “I’m on a quest. It’s my journey.”

“It’s just water but I feel good about it,” he said. “I know I’m going to recycle this and I know that we can recycle it.”

In the video, Momoa can be seen walking through a desert landscape filled with plastic water bottles littered everywhere. Momoa explained that “plastics are killing our planet,” and said there is a solution: aluminum.

“So please, please. There’s a change coming. Aluminum. We got to get rid of these plastic water bottles. Aquaman’s trying to do the best he can. For your kids, for my kids, for the world. Clean up the oceans, clean up the land.”

Momoa is currently filming “Dune,” an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel of the same name, about “the son of a noble family entrusted with the protection of a spice planet,” according to IMDb.

He’s also currently filming a television series “See,” about a dystopian future where people have lost all sense of sight and must use other means to survive. However, “all of that is challenged when a set of twins with sight is born,” according to IMDb.
