A married couple in their 60s was found shot to death Sunday after officers responded to reports of gunfire on Hawks Bill Place, in the Wood Ranch neighborhood, according to the Simi Valley Police Department (SVPD).

On Nov. 30 at about 12:03 p.m., SVPD received calls of shots being fired and dispatched officers to investigate. “When officers arrived on scene, they located two victims with gunshot wounds. The victims were transported to a local hospital in critical condition,” stated the SVPD advisory report.

By Sunday evening, the couple had succumbed to their injuries.

Authorities say there is no evidence the shooting was random and believe the victims were specifically targeted. “We don’t believe this is a random act,” said Detective Rick Morton in a televised interview with ABC7 Los Angeles. “We do believe the victims were targeted.”

The victims have been identified as Dr. Eric Cordes, a radiologist with more than 30 years of experience, and his wife, Vicki Cordes.

A relative on social media shared the news as well, writing in a tribute full of pictures with the couple: “The world will never be the same without you two in it. Visits to California will never be the same now that you two are gone. I’m never going to be able to spend the week at your house while you make me the worlds strongest Appletini. My best moments in life were spent in your backyard surrounded by family."

“You were the kindest, most generous and loving souls that welcomed everybody they met,” she shared.

Police have not yet identified or arrested a suspect. Investigators are exploring potential leads, including a possible link to a separate suicide and vehicle fire outside the region, but have provided few additional details.

“We asked that citizens remain out of the area as this is an active investigation, but there is no apparent threat to the public at this time,” stated the police department, adding that “further information will be provided as it becomes available.”

Wood Ranch is on the far west side of Simi Valley and is considered one of the city’s largest planned communities, with a mix of housing from townhomes to larger gated family houses, as well as walking trails and parks.

Dr. Cordes was a board-certified diagnostic radiologist with nearly three decades of clinical experience in Simi Valley.

He earned his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine and completed his diagnostic radiology residency training at Parkland Memorial Hospital and the Methodist Health System in Dallas.
