A popular membership-only retailer announced it is recalling one of its baked goods distributed in 22 states.

The potential for allergic reactions from consumers led Costco Wholesale to withdraw the Mini Beignets filled with Caramel because they were inadvertently packaged with Mini Beignets filled with Chocolate Hazelnut, according to a Costco statement.

“The mislabeled units contain undeclared Tree Nuts (Hazelnut/Filbert),” company leaders said in the recall notice.

The mislabeled pastry was distributed in Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and Washington between Jan. 16 and Jan. 30.

There are nine major food allergens that the FDA requires all companies to identify in their products. They include milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, and sesame.

Almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, filberts, hazel nuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pine nuts, pistachios, and walnuts are all considered tree nuts by the FDA, and people who have allergies to nuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, if they consume them.

The Mayo Clinic advises that anaphylaxis can result in blockages or narrowing of the breathing airways.

Ingredients listed on the dessert’s label include wheat flour, water, sugar, eggs, vegetable fats/oils (palm, canola), yeast, wheat gluten, salt, and dough conditioners while the caramel filling contains sweetened condensed milk, sugar, vegetable oil (palm kernel, palm), glucose syrup, glycerin, and natural flavors.

However, tree nuts were undeclared.

Costco did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication but warned on their website that members who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to Hazelnuts/Filberts run the risk of a severe life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the sweet treat.

Last year, Costco Wholesale issued a recall for Dubai Style Chocolate after discovering an incorrect allergy label that could pose risks to customers with wheat allergies.

The recall, announced in a Sept. 4 notice sent to Costco members, is applicable to Dubai Style Chocolate purchased between May 1 and Aug. 29, 2025.

The product's list of ingredients mislabeled "gluten" as "wheat" and wheat is an allergen, which could trigger an allergic reaction in customers with wheat sensitivities.

The manufacturer, Rolling Pin Baking Company LLC, announced the withdrawal through Costco's customer notification system.

"The company assesses the health risk to be minimal as gluten is listed on the allergen statement and gluten is found in wheat," Rolling Pin quality assurance director Eddie Dayan said in the recall notice.
