Matt Smith, of the BBC’s iconic sci-fi adventure series “Doctor Who” and Netflix’s original drama “The Crown” will play a key role in the new Star Wars: Episode IX, which will be directed by J.J. Abrams.

The film is scheduled to open on Dec. 19 and started shooting in London’s Pinewood Studios earlier this month. It is yet to be announced which role Matt Smith will play.

Smith received a 2018 Emmy nomination for his performance as Prince Philip in “The Crown” in the Best Drama Supporting Actor category, and it was his first time being nominated.

Born on October 28, 1982, Smith was raised in Northampton, UK. He studied Drama and Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. He became famous after landing the role of the eleventh “Doctor Who” on the long-running television show. At the age of 26, he was the youngest actor to take the role.

Smith insisted on wearing the trademark “Doctor Who” bow tie on the show.

Carrie Fisher, who starred as Princess Leia and passed away in December 2016, will also appear in the new Star Wars film, with her unreleased work from “The Force Awakens” that was aired in 2015.

In addition, Mark Hamill will play as Luke Skywalker, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, John Boyega as Finn, and Marie Tran as Rose will also return to the new Star Wars film.
