Obama’s DACA Nixed
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program issue cannot be solved by executive order. Both Republicans and Democrats have avoided a comprehensive overhaul of our immigration policies and processes, but that is the only way this is going to get fixed. Former President Donald Trump offered to resolve DACA if the Democrats agreed to end chain migration and lottery immigration, but Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) would not compromise, so the deal died. It will require a bipartisan effort.
Citizenship should never be gifted (yes, it is a gift, not a right) to anyone here illegally. As to DACA, there can be legal residency at best and there absolutely must be a cutoff date. Otherwise, this will be a huge incentive in perpetuity.
Barack Obama said in 2005, “We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States, undetected, undocumented, unchecked, and circumventing the line of people who are waiting patiently, diligently, and lawfully to become immigrants in this country.” “We all agree on the need to better secure the border,” he added. “We are a generous and welcoming people, here in the United States, but those who enter the country illegally disrespect the rule of law and they are showing disregard for those who are following the law.”
Laws are on the books now that allow people to come here legally and follow the steps to citizenship. This is the way and should be the only way. Anyone here illegally should be automatically refused and permanently denied a pathway. Those who slip across the border are interested in two things: blending in and having a child. Once this happens, deportation becomes very difficult or nearly impossible and they know this. Their goal is not to become citizens, but only to live in America.
It’s time to resolve the DACA issues so that these folks have a certain future, and not be used as a political football.
