Former NBA player Chris Bosh is on the mend after suffering a recent health scare that he said left him covered in his own blood.

"It was crazy, it was fast, it was instant," the two-time Hall of Famer said in an Instagram video on Wednesday. "There was no warning. I didn’t have any time to prepare for it. I was getting ready to go on a date with my wife, and the next thing you know I was on the ground. ... I'm lucky to be alive."
Bosh, 41, detailed his medical emergency in a Feb. 22 Substack post. He said he was walking from his closet into the bathroom when a sharp, numbing sensation shot down his left leg.

"I slowly came to in a pool of my own blood while my wife frantically spoke with 911," he wrote. "I tried to move my body the way I always had, and it didn’t respond."

The father of five didn't give any more information about what caused the episode. However, he has battled blood clot issues in the past.

The retired pro baller served in the NBA for 13 seasons, playing for the Toronto Raptors from 2003 until 2010, when he was traded to the Miami Heat.

He missed the second half of the 2014-2015 season after being hospitalized for blood clots in one of his lungs. He returned the following season briefly but was sidelined again after developing blood clots in his leg. A failed physical ahead of the 2016-2017 season ultimately took him out of the game, and he eventually announced his retirement in 2019.

Bosh, who has been married to his wife, Adrienne Bosh, since 2011, said his recent health scare profoundly changed his perspective, leading him to prioritize the passions and people that he'd previously neglected in his life.

"It was a terrifying event, something I had never experienced before," he penned. "That’s when the realization hit me, everything can collapse at a moment’s notice. There’s not always a warning. There’s not always a symptom or a buildup to let you know what’s coming. One moment you’re walking. The next moment, you could be gone."

Bosh urged his readers and fans to live their lives to the fullest, too.

"Pay attention to yourself and those around you," he wrote. "Think critically about where your time is going, and why. Good or bad, bring attention to it. The ordinary parts of life don’t feel meaningful until they’re taken away. And by then, it’s too late."
