The body of 22-year-old Alexis "Murry" Foust has been found nearly a month after the Northern Kentucky University student was first reported missing, officials said.

According to a press release from the Covington Police Department, Foust's remains were discovered on May 24 by an independent search party in a wooded area along Steel Plant Road in Wilder, just a few miles from campus.

Police Capt. Justin Bradbury said there were no signs of foul play and that the case has now been classified as a death investigation. He added that detectives are working the scene in collaboration with the Wilder Police Department and the Campbell County Coroner's Office, which will determine the official cause and manner of death in the coming days.

Bradbury urged the public to allow investigators and the coroner's office to continue their work in determining the circumstances surrounding the case, noting that Foust's family has requested privacy as they grieve.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the Foust family and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. While we are saddened by this loss, we hope this development can provide the family with some answers and a measure of closure," Bradbury said. "We also want to thank the community members who shared information, assisted in search efforts, and continued to support the Foust family throughout this investigation."

The Covington Police Department initially issued a missing person report on April 30 and asked for the public's help in locating Foust due to "concerns for their safety." On Facebook, a friend described Foust as transgender, sharing that the student had documented mental health disorders and took medication.

Foust, who was set to graduate on May 9, was last seen around 5:30 p.m. on April 27 just off the Decoursey Pike in Latonia, which is located on the other side of the Licking River from where the student's body was later found.

Northern Kentucky University said in a statement that counseling services would be available around the clock on campus for all students and staff, adding that the school was heartbroken to learn of Foust's passing.

"Our thoughts are with their family, friends and all who knew them. This is a profound loss for our campus community," the statement reads. "We are grateful to the Covington Police Department and all of those who assisted in the search efforts. We encourage any members of our campus community who may be struggling to reach out for support."
