Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s casual travel attire aboard Air Force One on a trip to China sparked a wave of online reactions this week after White House officials posted images and video on social media.

White House communications director Steven Cheung posted a photo on X showing Rubio in a gray Nike Tech fleece outfit, writing, "Secretary Rubio rocking the Nike Tech 'Venezuela' on Air Force One!" The post, which included a laughing emoji, quickly circulated across social media.
The White House also shared a video clip that began with Rubio saying, "If you don’t know now you know." The phrase became widely recognized during a press conference he gave after the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in January.

The White House video featured a rap song, then cut to a photo of Maduro handcuffed and wearing a Nike tracksuit labeled January 2026. The video next showed Rubio aboard Air Force One en route to China in a matching tracksuit, labeled May 2026. The video ended with the phrase "full circle moment."

The clip and image were posted as Rubio traveled with President Donald Trump on a high-stakes diplomatic trip to China, where officials are expected to focus on trade and security discussions.

Rubio has been among several U.S. officials sanctioned by China since 2020 for criticizing Beijing's human rights abuses. The sanctions included an entry ban and restrictions on conducting business with Chinese entities.

A Cuban-American, Rubio has been an outspoken opponent of communism. He is a critic of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) persecution of Falun Gong, also known as Falun Dafa.

Rubio introduced the Falun Gong Protection Act, H.R. 1540/S. 817 to combat forced organ harvesting and has condemned the CCP's decades-long campaign against the group.

Rubio was also a key author of congressional legislation imposing broad sanctions on China over the alleged use of forced labor by the mostly Muslim Uyghur minority.

According to Agence France-Presse, Chinese officials changed Rubio's name on their records so he could enter China.

After he became secretary of state in January 2025, Chinese officials and state media began using a different Chinese character to transliterate the first syllable of his surname to “lu.”

The change served as a workaround for China, allowing Beijing to keep sanctions tied to the original spelling while still permitting Rubio to travel to China, according to Agence France-Presse.

After Rubio’s outfit on Air Force One, social media users quickly reacted, creating their own internet memes.

One user wrote: "China banned Rubio years ago for owning them on human rights. Now he shows up in Maduro’s Nike 'Venezuela' tracksuit like he’s fresh off capturing another dictator. Sanctions? What sanctions? Flexing harder than Xi’s economy."

Nike Tech fleece outfits have gained popularity in online memes, mostly fueled by viral images of Maduro wearing similar attire after his capture by U.S. forces.
