A mother and her two daughters were killed Monday morning when their car was struck head-on in a fiery, three-vehicle crash on Highway 99 near Bakersfield, California.

A GoFundMe organized on the family’s behalf identified the victims as Vanessa and her daughters, Kloie and Kylie. The fundraiser said their vehicle was hit by a car traveling in the wrong direction at high speed, killing all three women.
The family was traveling home from Fresno after attending a concert together to celebrate Kloie’s upcoming 17th birthday, according to the fundraiser. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the concert, held at the Save Mart Center, featured Thee Sacred Souls, La Lom and the Womack Sisters.

“What should have been a weekend filled with memories and a celebration of Kloie turning 17 has instead left a family trying to comprehend the loss of a mother and her two daughters all at once,” the fundraiser description reads.

Kloie would have turned 17 on Aug. 20. Vanessa also leaves behind a son, and Kloie and Kylie leave behind a brother who will turn 16 on the same day, the fundraiser said.

The collision occurred at approximately 12:44 a.m. on Highway 99 north of 7th Standard Road, according to California Highway Patrol information reported by the Chronicle and ABC7. One vehicle was traveling north in the highway’s southbound lanes when it collided with the other two vehicles.

The Honda Accord carrying Vanessa and her daughters caught fire after the collision, and all three occupants died at the scene.

A 44-year-old man driving a BMW 530i and his passenger were hospitalized with severe injuries, according to ABC7. Two people traveling in a Chevrolet Colorado sustained minor injuries.

The GoFundMe was established to assist with funeral and memorial costs, the family’s immediate needs, and support for Vanessa’s surviving son.

“Vanessa, Kloie, and Kylie were so much more than the three lives mentioned in a news story. They were a mom, daughters, sisters, family and friends who were deeply loved and who should have made it home that night,” the description adds.

Centennial High School’s softball program also paid tribute to Kloie Wetmore, whom it described in a Facebook post as a student-athlete and member of its softball family.

“May her memory live on through the game she loved, the friendships she made, the people she inspired, and the countless lives she touched. Her presence on and off the field will never be forgotten,” CHS Softball wrote.

“Kloie will forever be a Golden Hawk.”
