Multiple people were killed and a police officer was seriously wounded on Sunday after a domestic violence incident escalated into a shooting in the city of Sandy, Oregon.
“This is a traumatic event for our community, and the Sandy Police Department. I know many people are grieving. I ask everyone in our community to keep the victims, our injured officer, their families, friends and all of the first responders in their thoughts tonight,” Sandy Police Chief Patrick Huskey said in a statement released late Sunday.
According to the Sandy Police Department, officers and deputies responded shortly before 4 p.m. to reports of a domestic disturbance and shooting in the 39000 block of Evans Street. Officers from the Sandy Police Department and deputies with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene and came under gunfire, prompting law enforcement to return fire.
Authorities said one officer was struck multiple times during the exchange. The wounded officer was evacuated by Life Flight helicopter and transported for medical treatment. Huskey said the officer was in stable condition and is expected to survive.
Police also confirmed that multiple victims were found dead at the scene. As of Monday, officials had not released the number of victims or publicly identified those killed.
During the incident, authorities issued an emergency alert warning residents to avoid the area. Police initially instructed nearby residents to lock their doors and remain indoors while officers worked to contain the situation. In a subsequent update, the department said the suspect had been confined to a residence and urged residents to continue sheltering in place.
The standoff ended shortly before 8 p.m. when the suspect surrendered to law enforcement and was taken into custody without injury. Authorities later announced that the shelter-in-place order had been lifted and that there was no ongoing threat to the community.

Suspect Identified

Authorities have since identified the suspect as 38-year-old Bryan Moore, according to Oregon Public Broadcasting, which cited the Clackamas County District Attorney's Office. Jail records show he was subsequently booked into the Clackamas County Jail on suspicion of murder and kidnapping.
Investigators from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office and the Clackamas County Major Crimes Team are processing the scene and conducting interviews as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials have not yet released information about a possible motive or the suspect’s identity.
Sandy Mayor Kathleen Walker described the incident as an “unimaginable loss of lives” and said the tragedy had shaken the community.
“Our Sandy community grieves the unimaginable loss of lives from a domestic violence incident,” Walker said in a statement. “This tragedy reaches beyond the neighborhood where it happened. It reaches the families and friends of the victims, and the neighbors who witnessed the shootings and aftermath.”
Walker also urged residents to support those affected and said the community must not ignore “the deeper issues—violence in the home, untreated trauma, and the silence that allows both to grow.”
City Manager Tyler Deems echoed those sentiments on Monday, saying the shooting’s impact would be felt for years.
“A terrible incident occurred in Sandy last night that has shaken our community; its effects will be with us for a long time to come,” Deems said. “Sandy is a wonderful place with a long legacy of rallying together when tragedy strikes.”
