The news release stated that Duke Carrillo, the midshipman 3rd class was taking a semi-annual physical readiness test when he collapsed while undertaking the 1.5-mile run portion of the test. The news release stated that initial responders provided exhaustive resuscitation to Carrillo, and he was then immediately transported to the Anne Arundel Medical Center.
Carrillo was pronounced dead at 12:23 p.m., after arriving at the hospital, according to the news release.
According to the post, the Naval Academy is providing grief counseling services to members in need, and are supporting Carrillo's friends and family at this time.
As indicated in the news release, Vice Admiral Sean Buck, the 63rd Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy offered his condolences along with his wife, saying, "my wife, Joanne, and I join the Brigade, staff, and faculty in mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Midshipman Duke Carrillo. Our most heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to the entire Carrillo family and our extended Naval Academy family during this extremely difficult time."
Carrillo, the 21-year-old from Flower Mound, Texas, went to the Naval Preparatory School in Newport, R.I., and completed the year there, he, along with his twin brother, attended the Class of 2022's Induction Day on June 28, 2018, in Annapolis, according to the news release.
"Duke was a Quantitative Economics major and had earned a 4.0 last semester. He was a member of the 24th Company, an avid intramural athlete, and a member of the Naval Academy’s Flight Training Squadron, VT-NA. He had served as a Naval Academy Summer Seminar squad leader this past summer and had aspirations of being a naval aviator," the news release stated.
In the news release, Sara Lewis, the 24th Company Officer Lieutenant, praised Carrillo, saying, "[Carrillo] was an active member of the 24th company; he was able to have a special and close relationship with each of his classmates and company mates. I am honestly able to say he was friends with everyone and uplifted those around him. Due to his calm and loving personality, he will be especially missed in the 24th company."
The cause of his death is still under investigation.
