Navitas Organics is voluntarily recalling certain lots of its 8-ounce Organic Chia Seeds because of a possible Salmonella contamination risk, according to an announcement released Friday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The recall is for products that were distributed nationwide through retail stores, including Whole Foods Market, as well as online retailers such as Amazon. “This recall is being conducted as a precautionary measure following a recall initiated by the company’s chia seed supplier,” the recall notice states.

Recalled products include Navitas Organics Organic Chia Seeds in 8-ounce sealed stand-up pouches with the UPC 858847000284. The recalled items carry nine-digit lot codes beginning with the letter “W.”

The lot codes are printed on the back of the package, above the nutrition label. There are eight different lot codes included in the recall that range from W31025283 to W31025317, with Best If Used By dates of either April 2027 or May 2027.

According to the recall notice, Navitas Organics has not received any reports of Salmonella contamination in the recalled products to date. The company also hasn’t received any reports of illness or adverse medical events associated with the chia seeds. “No other Navitas Organics products are affected,” states the recall notice.

"Navitas has provided Organic Chia Seeds to our customers for more than 20 years. Providing safe, healthy food for our customers is why we have been in business this long and it’s why we are recalling this product today,” said Ira Haber, CEO of Navitas.

According to the FDA, Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare instances, the infection can enter the bloodstream, leading to more serious complications.

“If you have any of the 8oz Organic Chia Seeds with the lot numbers listed above, do not consume them. We ask that you open the bag, discard the chia seeds, and dispose of the bag in a manner that makes it unusable,” states the recall notice.

Customers can return the recalled product to the place of purchase for a refund. For additional information or to request a replacement product, consumers can contact the company at 855-215-5702 between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.

According to the recall, the company is working closely with FDA. "We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience caused by this recall," stated the recall notice.
