Authorities in New York City are investigating after a 23-year-old woman was fatally shot in the eye early Thursday morning, just steps away from a Bronx playground and community college.

A spokesperson for the New York City Police Department (NYPD) told NTD via email Thursday that officers responded shortly after midnight to a 911 call of an assault outside a building on the 2100 block of Aqueduct Avenue in the 46th Precinct.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her left eye. She was subsequently transported by emergency medical services to the nearby Saint Barnabas Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The NYPD spokesperson identified the victim as 23-year-old Reyna Caceres, who lived in the Bronx, less than a mile away from the shooting scene.

The incident took place just down the street from Bronx Community College near a playground in Aqueduct Walk. The community park, which stretches across the University Heights and Fordham sections of the West Bronx, has previously drawn concerns over drug activity and other public safety issues.

According to NYPD data, more than 1,000 crimes have been reported in the precinct since the start of the year through May 24, including 414 felony assaults, 255 grand larcenies, 173 robberies, 81 burglaries, and five murders.
"Unfortunately, this is a socio-economically kind of underprivileged community," one local resident told CBS News. "When you don't have the right resources and opportunity for youth and the kids to be able to expend some of that energy, and to be able to find an outlet that's outside of the streets, unfortunately, that's what happens."

In local media coverage, plastic cups, bottles of alcohol, and even a hookah pipe could be seen scattered across the sidewalk in front of the playground, which had been cordoned off with yellow police tape.

Loved ones told ABC 7 Eyewitness News that Caceres had been at the playground around the time of the shooting for a gathering celebrating the life of a friend who had been killed. Witnesses told the station they heard roughly 10 gunshots ring out, adding that multiple shooters had opened fire on those gathered for the party.

Authorities have not confirmed these details, and no additional information was provided about what may have led up to the shooting. A description of possible suspects has also not been released.

The NYPD spokesperson told NTD that no arrests have been made at this time. The investigation into the fatal shooting remains ongoing.
