Quebec Lake in Canada is part of an invention lab for 31-year-old Catalin Alexandru Duru. He is responsible for the creation of the Omni Hoverboard, a long-time dream for many kids and adults.  Duru, the Montreal innovator, also owns his own company, Omni Hoverboards.

If you are unfamiliar with hoverboards, think of a larger circular drone that flies with a single passenger standing and strapped on top of it. They’ve only been around for a few years and although you can purchase a flying hoverboard (complete kit) for around $5,900, they haven’t quite reached the masses yet.

The Omni Hoverboard shown in this video defies gravity with propellers. Think of a fan with blades turned on its side. Like a helicopter, you can move in any direction, up and down or side to side. You can fly over water or land, or anywhere allowed! This hoverboard is battery-powered and is good for a few of minutes of flight time. Like anything that flies through the air, safety is a concern. Crashes are possible.

Duru himself broke the world record for the longest hoverboard flight. He flew five meters above a lake for a distance of 275.9 meters on his homemade hoverboard. The flight was fast and short, lasting just a little more than a minute and a half.

The Omni Hoverboard has led to varied designs by other inventors such as the “Hendo” hoverboard and the “Lexus” hoverboard. If you’re thinking of Lexus the automobile, the answer is yes. The automobile company best known for its luxury cars is now in the business of creating hoverboards.
