A popular pet food company has announced a recall of two specific lots of PEDIGREE canned dog food.

The voluntary withdrawal is based on discovering the product, which was earmarked for destruction, was fraudulently diverted and placed on shelves and then sold into the U.S. marketplace, according to an FDA alert.
“The recalled product may contain metal and plastic foreign material,” company officials said in a press release. “The potential presence of sharp metal and plastic foreign material in the cans could pose a hazard to your dog.”

Mars Petcare US, Inc., of Franklin, Tennessee, did not respond to requests for comment.

The recalled products did not meet Mars and PEDIGREE stringent safety and quality standards, according to a statement by Pedigree.

The lot codes in question include  613C3KKCFC and 613C1KKCFC.

“These two lots had been sent to a third-party vendor for destruction,” Pedigree company leaders said. “Mars later discovered that the product appears to have been fraudulently diverted and sold into the marketplace in the United States.”

The FDA warned that the health risks for a dog include choking, lacerations, and blockages in the gastrointestinal tract.

Consumers who fed the recalled product to their dog and are concerned are urged to contact their veterinarian.

“Mars is working with authorities to determine how these products entered the marketplace,” company officials added. “We are committed to protecting pets and helping consumers identify and remove the affected products from use. We have received no related reports of pet illness or injury to date.”

This isn't the first time a PEDIGREE pet food product was recalled.
