The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) assigned its second-highest risk alert this week to 75,566 half-pint units of chocolate milk.

Potential quality control issues led Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii of Hilo, Hawaii, to recall its cartons of fat-free chocolate milk, according to an FDA enforcement report.

The recalled flavored grade A pasteurized homogenized milk is sold in Hawaii and contains nonfat milk, sugar cane, cocoa (processed with alkali), corn starch, carrageenan, salt, natural flavor, Vitamin A Palmitate, and Vitamin D3.

“Half-pint chocolate fat free milk is recalled due to potential quality control issues,” FDA officials said.

Meadow Gold Dairies Hawaii company leaders did not respond to requests for comment by the time of publication.

On its website, Meadow Gold states that its dairy products are sold at Safeway, Walmart, and 7-Eleven Hawaii.
The FDA designated the recall a Class 2 event, which is the federal government’s second-highest risk alert and is described on the FDA website as exposure to a product that may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.

A Class 1 recall is defined as having a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to will cause serious adverse health consequences or death, while a Class 3 event involves products that violate regulations but are unlikely to cause health problems, such as minor labeling errors.

This is the second dairy product to be withdrawn from shelves in recent weeks.

The FDA announced the recall of fat-free milk sold at Woodman’s stores in Illinois and Wisconsin on Nov. 26.

The potential for contamination with food-grade cleaning agents led Prairie Farms to voluntarily recall select Prairie Farms Gallon Fat Free Milk produced at its Dubuque, Iowa, facility.

Some 320 gallons of the liquid dairy product were sold before the issue was discovered and the FDA urged consumers who purchased the product with the above code dates to refrain from consuming it.

“Only a specific segment of the Dec 8 production run was impacted,” Prairie Farms company leaders told NTD. “The affected product was processed between 17:51 and 21:23, representing a portion of that day’s production.”

The UPC is 7273023117.

Food-grade cleaning agents, such as pot and pan detergent and liquid dish soap, can cause illness if consumed.

“On November 24, Prairie Farms was made aware of a potential quality issue,” FDA officials said. “An investigation was immediately initiated, and based on that investigation, affected product was removed from stores and a recall was initiated.”
