Shen Yun Performing Arts left audiences amazed after a performance in New York City on April 12, taking theatergoers on a journey through ancient China. New York City council member Nantasha Williams, who was in attendance, presented a proclamation to the artists, congratulating Shen Yun on their 20th anniversary.

“The show was amazing. And what’s so amazing about the show is that it’s based and founded in New York City, and this is like one of the main places to really have freedom of expression. It was such a beautiful show,” said Ms. Williams, the Deputy Speaker for the New York City Council. “First of all, the technique was amazing and really chronological, the 5,000 years of China in just these two hours. I don’t know how you guys did it, but you did a great job.”

“I’ve always wanted to attend it. I finally got to, and it exceeded my expectations. The music is phenomenal, matched with the dance movements. It’s so synchronized and breathtaking when you see all of the colors and all of the movements along with the music, all three intermeshed so brilliantly. It was mesmerizing to me. I really, really feel so spiritually moved by it, actually,” said Jonciewain Donenfeld, a sales manager at Zerox.

Shen Yun’s mission is to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture from before communism.

Joe Curado, a sales manager for Mercedes-Benz, said: “It can show exactly how the old culture of China, for as far as I’m concerned, was able to bring truth back to the society, and everything in the show, everybody can enjoy everything.”

“I’m a fan of tradition, and the traditional dances that I saw were actually my favorite. So I love the men’s classical dance, and so I totally think that is a great thing to do. We must remember our traditions,” said Ms. Williams. “I think what the cultural performance can teach us in today’s society is really about freedom of expression and freedom to practice what you want, and about humanity. There were a lot of references to us being divine beings and making sure to essentially love and care for one another.”

“The culture that they are exuding, they’re trying to carry it on for future generations. However, it’s so sad that it can’t be in the homeland. It’s perplexing to me, so sad, but at least we get to enjoy it,” said Ms. Donenfeld.

Every year, Shen Yun presents an all-new program, with brand-new dances, music, and costumes.

“I want to say thank you for giving me the opportunity to feel so cleansed and spiritually moved, and there’s hope in the world because of this performance. That’s what I came from leaving it, that’s what they made me feel like,” said Ms. Donenfeld. “We’re very grateful in New York City to be able to have this opportunity without any negative vibrations, and that we get to see it actually happen. We’re very, I’m very grateful.”

Ms. Williams said, “They’ve been here for 20 years. Clearly, you guys are a friend of New York City.”

Shen Yun will be performing in Newark, New Jersey, from April 29 through May 3.
