Six people were hurt following a car accident involving a commercial truck that crashed into a building and hit pedestrians in Boston on Tuesday.
The accident occurred at the intersection of Kneeland and Harrison Avenue, according to a Boston Fire Department social media post. The box truck landed on its side and was wedged between a pole and a building, according to emergency officials.
“They used extrication tools, a hydraulic ram and cutting tools, to pry open and help extricate the driver from the vehicle,” Boston Fire Department public information officer Brian Alkins told NTD. “At least six fire trucks arrived on the scene within three minutes of the accident.”
Alkins added that the box truck also hit a fire hydrant and two poles.
During a press conference held at the intersection of Kneeland and Tyler on April 1, Police Commissioner Michael Cox confirmed that four people were transported to local hospitals.
“One is in critical condition and three are stable,” Cox said. “Two others were impacted but refused medical care. It seems to be a traffic accident more than anything else, however, it’s still under investigation.”
No deaths have been reported.
From photos taken at the scene, the truck appeared to belong to Penske, which is a transportation service with a leasing arm that rents commercial trucks.
“Our thoughts are with those who have been injured in this unfortunate incident. Based on our records, the truck involved was out on rent to a commercial trucking company.”
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, who also attended the press conference, thanked the EMS and all of the first responder agencies.
“This is such a busy part of the city right in the middle of the day,” Wu said. "It is quite shocking to see the scene as it stands right now. We do have trauma supports available, and they will be in the neighborhood.”
The driver’s name has yet to be released, nor the circumstances that caused the accident.
