Sony launched a new high-end smartphone on Monday (February 27) boasting a number of industry firsts, including a 4K HDR display and a camera capable of filming slow-motion footage at four times the rate possible on rival devices.

The Xperia XZ Premium captures video at up to 960 frames per second.

“The Sony super slow-motion capability enables you to capture life in impressive slow-motion detail that is so precise it will reveal the things beyond human vision. With the super slow-motion, every day moments that happen in the blink of an eye, can become stunning visual memories—a cat leaping in the air for play, a hummingbird in flight or a balloon bursting in mid-air, to name a few. You can dramatize just about everything for any moment, with the super slow-motion,” Sony Global Sales and Marketing EVP Hideyuki Furumi said.

It is also able to detect motion in a picture that allows it to take four images in the second before the shutter button is pressed.

The ‘Motion Eye’ technology was made possible by a new type of stacked image sensor that has built-in memory of its own—a world-first for a smartphone.

The new model was unveiled alongside several lower-specification devices on the first day of the Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona.

The Japanese tech giant also announced a partnership with Amazon Prime Video, which will result in more 4K HDR content being delivered.

“With 4K HDR you get this very vivid, more colors, more contrast, more details so your viewing experience becomes more immersive. It just takes you to the next level of viewing,” said Jun Makino, Senior Manager of Product marketing at Sony.

Sony said the device will be available from “late spring” but did not mention its price.

The company confirmed its Xperia Touch will go on sale at a similar time.

The interactive projector enables apps to be displayed onto any flat surface that can then act like a large touchscreen.

Sony also unveiled the Xperia Ear Open-style Concept—an in-ear hands-free smart assistant that allows users to hear their surroundings as well as a virtual assistant.
