Chicago police are investigating after a mass shooting on the city's South Side early Friday left two people dead and five others injured.
A spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department told NTD via email that two men approached a group of people standing outside near Cornell Square Park on the 5100 block of South Wood Street just before 12:30 a.m. and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
Two victims—a man who sustained gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and leg and another man who was shot in the abdomen—were taken to local hospitals in critical condition where they were later pronounced dead, the spokesperson said.
Three other men were wounded during the shooting. A 21-year-old and 32-year-old suffered gunshot wounds to the back and torso, respectively, and are being treated at the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they are listed in good condition. The third man, 54, sustained a gunshot wound to the ankle and was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.
A 23-year-old woman was struck multiple times in the head and transported to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, while a 30-year-old woman sustained gunshot wounds to the thigh and hand and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in fair condition.
One local resident, Mario Ramirez, told ABC 7 Eyewitness News that he heard the gunshots outside his home, noting that they sounded like a machine gun.
The investigation into the mass shooting remains ongoing, and no arrests have been made. Authorities have not released the identities of the victims or any descriptions of the suspects. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
