Tomato Bisque Soup Kit Sold at Walmart Recalled Over Possible Listeria Contamination

Thousands of tomato bisque soup kits sold at select Walmart stores in almost 30 states have been recalled over concerns the products may be contaminated with Listeria.

Kettle Cuisine LLC issued a voluntary recall of 3,240 packs of its Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kits on Wednesday after routine testing yielded a "presumptive positive result" for Listeria monocytogenes, according to an Aug. 13 notice shared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The harmful bacteria is generally spread when food comes in contact with contaminated surfaces during manufacturing or storage, per the FDA. The agency notes that the listeriosis-causing bacteria can lead to serious and potentially fatal infections in young children, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems.

"Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, infection with Listeria monocytogenes can also cause miscarriage and stillbirth in pregnant women," the FDA notice states.

Other symptoms of mild listeriosis may include muscle aches or vomiting, while severe cases may result in confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, the FDA said.

Kettle Cuisine said that it has not received any confirmed reports of illnesses in connection with the recalled tomato bisque soup kits to date.

The affected 14-ounce containers were distributed from June 30 through July 7 and sold exclusively at Walmart locations in 29 states. These include Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The recalled ready-to-heat kits are packaged in a wrapped tray and feature a UPC number of 194346474004. They can also be identified by the best-by date of Aug. 22, which is printed on the packaging.

Kettle Cuisine said the affected product should not be eaten, served, sold, or distributed and advised customers to dispose of the kits or return them to the place of purchase for a refund instead.

"Do not rely on smell or appearance to determine whether the product is safe," the company added. "Wash hands after handling the product. Clean and sanitize refrigerators, freezers, containers, utensils, countertops, and other surfaces that may have encounter the product."

Kettle Cuisine urged anyone who has developed any symptoms of listeriosis after eating the recalled tomato bisque soups to contact a healthcare provider. Anyone with questions about the recall can contact the company directly by calling (617) 409-1104 during normal business hours.
